The skin is a mechanical and biological barrier between the internal and external medium. The skin provides protection from: mechanical impacts and pressure, variations in temperature, micro-organisms, radiation and chemicals. Besides, the skin maintains the homeostasis and have immunological functions, being the first line of defence against infections. Data about topical toxicity and transdermal penetration via healthy and diseased skin of nanoparticles is of highest importance not only for intentional uses (e.g. cosmetics, pharmaceutics) but also for non-intentional uses (work exposure).
In this project, we develop a model of human epidermis that include macrophages and dendritic cells to test toxicity and penetration of nanoparticles and to asses would healing.
